Using the Application
  1. Why does the application not display any birthday or anniversary?

We understand a lot of our customers have recently purchased their new iPhone/iPod touch and we are happy for you. You need to make sure you have created contacts with birthday and anniversary information, otherwise nothing will show up in Upcoming Events.

So start creating your contacts and add their birthday and anniversary information into your iPhone/iPod touch Contact application today. You will find the following videos helpful:

    a) How to add a Birthday to a contact in the Contacts Application?

    b) How to add Anniversaries to a contact in the Contacts Application?

  2. What is the difference between birthdays entered in Contacts application versus birthdays entered directly in Upcoming Events?

Depending on your needs, you will have to decide how you would like to enter birthdays. Generally, you would add birthdays and anniversaries to the Contacts application of your iPhone/iPod touch:

Upcoming Events was designed to complement the Contacts application on the iPhone/iPod touch. It retrieves, consolidates and organizes the anniversaries and birthdays associated with your contacts in the application, offering several different views in the tabs at the bottom of the screen. Birthdays and anniversaries added this way will be synchronized with your desktop and across multiple platforms.

Alternatively, you may add a birthday directly in Upcoming Events. This will be stored in a separate database and does not synchronize with the desktop. It was designed so that you may add birthdays of kids, spouse of your contacts and acquiantances. By adding to this separate database, it will not clutter your Contacts application.

  3. How do I add a photo to a Contact?

The following video demonstrates how you can add a photo to a contact in the Contacts application:

  4. Where can I find the settings for Upcoming Events?

With version 5.0, the settings for Upcoming Events is found directly within the application. To get there, click on the "Settings" button on the navigation bar that appears at the top of the screen within the application.

  5. Will birthdays created directly in Upcoming Events be backed up?

Birthdays created directly in Upcoming Events will be backed up with your computer whenever you perform a full synchronization with iTunes.

  6. What is the use of the partial date feature when adding birthdays directly in Upcoming Events?

The partial date feature allows you to enter a birthday for someone whom you do not have the year information:

Feature Enquiries
  1. Does Upcoming Events support in-application adding of birthdays?

Upcoming Events now supports adding of birthdays directly in a separate database. This is in response to a lot of requests from our users. This separate database does not synchronize with the desktop, it is designed so that you may add birthdays of kids, spouse of your contacts and acquiantances. By adding to this separate database, it will not clutter your Contacts application. So for any new birthdays you add, you will have to decide where to best add the new entry.

  2. Does Upcoming Events show badges when a birthday or anniversary happens today? Will there be reminder alerts when an event draws near?

Upcoming Events now displays a badge on the application icon in the home screen. The purpose of this badge is to keep you constantly reminded whenever you see the application icon on the home screen. In order to update the number on the badge, the application will have to be run. This is a universal behavior across all iPhone and iPod touch applications at this moment.

Upcoming Events now implements Push Notification alerts that will automatically update the badge without the user having to actively run the application. It also presents a alert message at a configurable time set by the user. You can set these up under the settings of the application.

  3. Can I use WIFI for Push Notification alerts?

WIFI is used for push notifications only if there is no cellular connection or if the device is an iPod touch. To receive notifications via WIFI, the device's display must be on (that is, it cannot be sleeping) or it must be plugged in.

  4. Do you have some general information about how Apple's Push Notification behaves? Is there a system-wide control on Push Notifications for my iPhone/iPod touch?

Push notification alerts are available with iPhone OS 3.0 and later on both the iPhone and iPod touch.

WIFI is used for push notifications only if there is no cellular connection or if the device is an iPod touch. To receive notification via WIFI, the device's display must be on (not sleeping) or it must be plugged in.

If the device is offline (turned off or does not have WIFI or cellular reception), only the last notification to be delivered will be sent once it gets back online. As such, delivery of push notifications is not guaranteed.

Push Notifications restrictions can be set from within Settings application of the iPhone and iPod touch devices. This is done through the Notifications preference of the Settings application. Each application's notification type (icon badging, alert messages, and sounds) can be selectively enabled or disabled.

  5. I have an unlocked iPhone. Will I be able to receive Push Notifications for Upcoming Events?

Unlocked iPhones cannot use Apple’s Push Notification service, even over WIFI. While we’ve heard reports of hacks that can enable this on phones, we don’t know the efficacy of the methods and we cannot support them.
